About this speaker

Col. Gonzalo Mila, Infantry Branch, graduated from Uruguay’s Military Academy in 1979. Wide-ranging military career, including duties as Battalion and Brigade Commander. He has also graduated as a Staff Officer and Human Rights Specialist. Retired from the Army since January 2015 and currently serving as Special Advisor on Peace Operations at Uruguay’s National Support System for Peace Operations.

With large PKO experience fulfilling tasks as MILOB, Staff Officer and Contingents in different UN Peace Operations. During his duties developed significant experiences as DDRRR officer and conducting POC tasks, particularly in the last one, in DRC, as Uruguay Battalion Commander.  (2013-2014).

Since 2010 he has been participating in numerous training activities, such as DDR/DDRRR UNTOT; Peace Support Operations Courses, CMI/CMR Seminars, and Integration of Women and Gender Perspective into the Armed Forced online training, organized by the Canadian Directorate of Military Training and Cooperation (DMTC); UN Protection of Civilian ToT Courses organized by the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI) in different countries.

Col Mila is working at Uruguay’s DOD, developing the National Action Plan for the implementation of the UNSCR1325 - WPS. He is also supporting the UN Integrated Training Service and the Office of Military Affairs/UNDPO developing the UN Engagement Platoon Handbook and the Specialized Training Material for the UN Infantry Battalion.
